AI for Work - FIT Office
Instructor: Dave Milliken
This course is designed to equip learners with the essential digital, data, and analytical skills required to thrive in today's technology-driven workplace. Blending practical tools with real-world scenarios, it provides a clear pathway from foundational concepts to applied data analysis and automation.
Participants will begin by developing a solid understanding of what artificial intelligence is, how it works, and where it is (and isn't) useful in a professional context. This is combined with a strong grounding in Microsoft Office, with a particular focus on Excel as a core tool for organising, analysing, and presenting data.
As the course progresses, learners will explore how data is structured and managed, including an introduction to databases and SQL, enabling them to query and extract meaningful insights from larger datasets. Alongside this, they will be introduced to Python, gaining hands-on experience with basic programming concepts, data handling, and simple automation techniques.
A key focus throughout is data analyticsâunderstanding how to collect, clean, analyse, and interpret data to support decision-making. Learners will work with realistic datasets to identify trends, generate insights, and communicate findings effectively using charts, summaries, and visualisations.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to understand the role of AI and data in modern organisations, confidently use Excel for data analysis and scenario modelling, work with structured data using databases and SQL, apply basic Python programming to automate tasks and analyse data, and interpret data and communicate insights clearly and effectively.
This course is ideal for individuals looking to build practical, job-ready skills that can be immediately applied in a wide range of business and administrative roles.
Introduction to Databases
Instructor: Dave Milliken
This course provides learners with a practical and accessible introduction to database design and data management, using Microsoft Access as a familiar starting point within the Microsoft Office ecosystem Learners begin by exploring what data is, why databases are used, and how information should be structured to ensure accuracy, consistency, and scalability. Rather than focusing only on software features, the course places strong emphasis on core database principles that apply across many systems and industries. Throughout the course, learners are guided step by step through: understanding and organising raw data, designing databases using recognised normalisation techniques, creating and managing tables and relationships, retrieving and analysing data using queries and SQL, building simple forms and reports, and introducing basic automation and Excel integration. A realistic, scenario-based approach is used, allowing learners to design a database for a fictional organisation and see how database decisions affect real-world systems. Concepts are introduced gradually, with theory reinforced through guided demonstrations and practical activities. By the end of the course, learners will have: a solid understanding of how relational databases work, transferable skills applicable beyond Microsoft Access, and the confidence to design, build, and query structured databases. This course is suitable for beginners with basic computer skills and is particularly valuable for learners interested in data handling, administration, IT support, business systems, or further study in databases and programming.
Introduction to Microsoft Excel (Beginners)
Instructor: Dave Milliken
This course is designed for people who want to finally feel comfortable and confident using Excel, whether for work, study, or everyday tasks. If youâve opened Excel before and felt overwhelmed by rows, columns, and formulas, youâre not alone â and this course is built specifically with that in mind. We start at the very beginning and explain things clearly, step by step, in plain English, with no assumptions and no jargon.
Youâll learn how spreadsheets actually work, how to enter and organise data properly, and how to use essential Excel features without fear of âbreaking something.â The course is practical, hands-on, and supportive, with real examples, guided exercises, and downloadable practice files. By the end, youâll not only know what to do in Excel, but why youâre doing it â giving you the confidence to use Excel independently long after the course has finished.
